TimeVue – Unable to Poll Clock Using USB to Serial Adapter After Most Recent Windows 10 update

KB0173: TimeVue – Unable to Poll Clock Using USB to Serial Adapter After Most Recent Windows 10 update

Solution:

There is a conflict with the USB to Serial drivers needed for our older cables (Prolific USB to Serial version 2007) and the Latest Win10 automatic update.  Installing this driver is causing a Windows conflict that will cause a Windows reboot.  At this point, there are only a couple of options if you are using our “single-molded” USB adapter cable.

  • You can order a special cable and adapter:  RJ-11 to DB-9 Serial cable with a newer USB to Serial Adapter.

  • Install and move TimeVue to another PC running an earlier version of Windows.  The original CD is needed to do this.

  • If you have someone local that can assist, or if you feel comfortable, you can also try going back to a “previous build” of Windows before the update occurred and disable automatic Windows updates temporarily.

  • Upgrade to one of our newer Web Based Time Clock Systems.

TIP: All customers are strongly encouraged to upgrade to one of our newer TotalPass systems.   This Web enabled clock does not require a software installation and is compatible with all operating systems.

If you are using an older RJ-11 to DB-9 Serial cable with a separate USB to Serial adapter, you can purchase a newer Win10 compatible adapter off the internet or at a local PC store.   Simply replace the USB to Serial adapter you are currently using and install the newer drivers that come with the newer adapter.
